What is SEO

  1. What is SEO?
  2. SEO is a mysterious process where gremlins from Google and Yahoo and the others crawl around the web looking for websites they like. If they like your website then they add it to their catalog of sites to use when someone looks for something on the Internet. If you do a good enough job of getting the gremlins to like you then you get better rankings when someone looks for your product or service.
  3. As much the above seems like tongue-in-cheek, it actually gives a fairly good picture of what actually happens in SEO. The “gremlins” are what the search engines call “Robots” or “Spiders” or “Algorithms”. They crawl around the web (Internet) to catalog the websites they find. Then they use this catalog to search through when a “Searcher” (you) looks for something.
  4. The letters S.E.O. stand for Search engine Optimization. This is the art and science of getting the search engines, (Google, Yahoo, Bing and all the others), rank your website higher in the listings when someone (we’ll call the “Searcher”). Types in a search term while looking for your type of business.
  5. I believe a little information about what a search engine is all about is in order here. A search engine provides its service free to the searcher as well as to the website owner. So how does it make money? Well, Google is the largest advertiser in the world. You may have noticed that a couple of the listings at the top of the page of results when you perform a search are in a lightly shaded area. These are the results at the top of the list.
  6. These results as well as all the ones on the right side of the page are paid listings. Google has a program called AdWords where it sells top listings to anyone who is willing to pay the price. When you click on one of these listings the client, who paid Google for the listing, pays Google a price for the click. I will cover AdWords in a later article, but for now I just want to explain what SEO is.
  7. So, if you don’t want to pay for listings then how do you get your site listed on the first page of the results? This is a tricky thing. Since the search engines need to be returning the most relevant results when a searcher types in a keyword, they have to do all they can to ensure that the results are the best. Otherwise the searcher will use another search engine and Google will lose a bit of advertising revenue.
  8. So Google and the others use various computer programs called “Algorithms” which help them determine which of the trillions of websites fit the searcher’s terms best. There are on-site and off-site factors to consider by these programs, (also called “Robots”, or “Spiders” among other names).
  9. Since the scope of this article is to explain what SEO is I will go more into detail about the factors that the search engines will look for in other articles. Right now the point is that SEO is the art and science of optimizing your website to get the best rankings for the various search terms someone might use to find your business.
  10. I will detail how to do this in other articles in this blog. Here are some of the factors I will be writing about:
  11. 1.      The Domain name
  12. 2.      The Title of the website
  13. 3.      The description of the website
  14. 4.      The content of the website
  16. Each of these factors will require an article of their own to fully explain them. Look around this site to get more information.
